...a feminist & literary-themed subscription box, supporting female writers.
|
About UsRebellion Book Box is a literary-themed subscription box based in Canada, supporting female writers.
We have seen that the publishing industry and retail sector tends to focus their dollars on male authors, even though women make up the vast majority of readers. Writers have been trying to combat this by assuming masculine pen names or using their gender-neutral initials for centuries. We are trying to play our small, corrective part by signal-boosting female-identifying authors through our subscription box (and eventual online book store). Rebellion Book Box is the only literary subscription box shipping from Canada, payable in Canadian dollars! |
What's in the Box? |
Rebellion Book Boxes ship once every 2 months and contain at least one brand new novel written by a fantastic, female author! A few novel items (see what we did there?) will also be included in each shipment and might include stationary, themed snacks, handmade goodies from some of our favourite Etsy shops, and all sorts of other fun things we come across in our journey.
*Rebellion Book Boxes may include novels featuring "mature" content and/or language. |
Where we're going... |
In the future, Rebellion Books will also be a curated, online retailer specializing in female-focused fiction novels and fiction books from the Canadian perspective. There will be no "featured titles" because every title will be featured.
Curated retailers provide a more focused shopping experience in a world filled with big-box stores and mega-websites. Curated stores and sites ensure product relevancy and has gained traction in the industry for its ability to personalize the customer experience. Rebellion will carry a small number of titles (50-110 total) and rotate inventory relatively quickly, allowing supplies to be tailored to consumer preferences. The writing of female authors is often discredited as genre fiction (aka "chick lit") and receives less marketing and retail support than similar works by writers. (The Guardian wrote about it here.) While the overall goal is to signal-boost female-identifying writers, we have also been working hard to ensure books stocked in both the fiction and non-fiction genres come writers from diverse social backgrounds. |
